While port operations focus on mitigating low-frequency rumble from auxiliary generators, similar principles apply to EPON equipment: ensuring that installed systems do not exceed background noise levels and do not contribute to community disturbance. EPON systems, being passive and electronic, typically operate well below these regulatory thresholds.
To maintain low noise levels, EPON equipment is often installed in ventilated cabinets or server rooms with acoustic insulation. Cooling fans, if present, are designed to operate at low decibel levels, and modern OLTs and ONUs are engineered for energy efficiency, which further reduces heat and fan noise. In environments where noise is a concern, such as near residential areas or sensitive port facilities, additional measures like soundproof enclosures or remote placement of active components can be implemented.
