DAS can also detect natural hazards such as landslides or earthquakes, providing early warnings and enhancing safety (MIT Technologist) .
Specialized fiber optic cables are used in high-speed rail projects, such as Italy's Frecciarossa line, where fire-resistant and robust fiber optic cables meet stringent safety and performance standards (Tratos Group) . These cables are designed to withstand harsh outdoor conditions, including temperature fluctuations, vibrations, dust, moisture, and electromagnetic interference, ensuring reliable operation in both underground and outdoor installations (Fiberbroadband.org) .
Fiber optic cables are a critical component of modern railway infrastructure, enabling high-speed communication, real-time monitoring, and enhanced safety. Their versatility allows integration into signaling, train control, and monitoring systems, while their durability and scalability ensure long-term reliability and cost-effective upgrades. This makes fiber optics a cornerstone of the digital transformation of rail transport.
