How to restart and refresh the IP address of the optical splitter

You can restart your optical splitter by power cycling or using the reset button, and refresh its IP address via DHCP release/renew commands or router reboot.

Restarting the Optical Splitter (ONT)

  1. Power Cycle Method
    • Unplug the power cord from the optical splitter or ONT.
    • Wait about 30 seconds to allow residual power to discharge.
    • Plug the power cord back in and wait a few minutes for the device to fully boot and reconnect to your ISP's network .
  2. Reset Button Method
    • Locate the small reset button on the ONT (usually on the back or bottom).
    • Press and hold the button for 10–15 seconds using a paper clip or pin.
    • Release the button and wait for the ONT to restart. This restores default network settings and can resolve configuration conflicts .

Refreshing the IP Address

  1. Via Router or ONT DHCP
    • Most ONTs receive IP addresses automatically from your ISP's DHCP server. Restarting the ONT or router often triggers a new IP assignment .
  2. Using a Computer on the Network
    • On Windows:
      • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
      • Type ipconfig /release and press Enter to release the current IP.
      • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter to request a new IP from the DHCP server.
      • Type ipconfig to verify the new IP address .
    • On macOS or Linux, similar commands (sudo dhclient -r and sudo dhclient) can release and renew the IP.

Additional Tips

  • Check Power and Connections: Ensure the ONT is receiving power and all fiber connections are secure .
  • ISP Support: If restarting and refreshing the IP does not restore connectivity, contact your ISP, as some optical splitters may require remote provisioning to assign a new public IP .
  • Backup Settings: If your ONT has custom configurations, note them before performing a reset to avoid losing network settings . By following these steps, you can effectively restart your optical splitter and refresh its IP address, resolving most connectivity issues and ensuring a stable network connection.
