After assembly, the epoxy is cured under controlled conditions. The fiber end-face is polished using specialized polishing machines to achieve a smooth, flat, or angled surface depending on the connector type (UPC or APC). Polishing quality directly affects signal transmission and long-term reliability .

Step 4: Inspection and Testing

Each patch cord undergoes visual inspection and performance testing. Key parameters include insertion loss, return loss, and mechanical durability. High-quality cords meet IEC and ITU standards, ensuring consistent optical performance for applications in data centers, FTTH networks, and industrial optical systems .

Step 5: Installation Considerations

Proper handling during installation is essential. Patch cords must be routed to respect minimum bend radii, cleaned before mating, and correctly labeled for traceability. Cross-mating incompatible connectors (e.g., SC/APC with SC/UPC) must be avoided to prevent signal degradation .
