The viewing angle of a fiber optic panel is primarily determined by the fiber tip design. Standard flat-cleaved fibers emit light along the fiber axis, with divergence defined by the numerical aperture (NA) of the fiber. The NA sets the maximum acceptance or emission angle for total internal reflection, and higher NA fibers produce wider emission cones . Angle-cleaved fibers are often used to reduce back reflections. For example, an 8° cleave can suppress Fresnel reflections from ~4% to ~0.001%, which is critical in high-power laser systems or sensitive optical measurements . While the cleave angle primarily affects reflection, it also slightly tilts the emission direction, modifying the effective viewing angle.
Side-firing fibers or angled lensed fibers are designed to emit light perpendicular or at a specific angle to the fiber axis. Typical designs feature angles around 40–42°, using the Brewster angle principle to achieve total internal reflection at the fiber tip . These fibers are widely used in biomedical applications, such as endoscopy, optogenetics, and laser tissue ablation, where precise lateral illumination is required. Lensed fiber ends can further control the emission profile. Ball lenses or axicon-shaped tips reduce beam divergence and focus light into a smaller spot, effectively narrowing or shaping the viewing angle for coupling into waveguides or photonic circuits . The curvature and tapering of the lens determine the final emission angle and beam profile.
