Common Colors for Optical Cables

Optical cables use standardized colors to identify fiber types, individual strands, and cable jackets, with yellow for single-mode, orange or aqua for multimode, and additional colors for high-density or special-purpose fibers.

Fiber Jacket Colors

The outer jacket color of a fiber optic cable provides an immediate visual cue about the fiber type and its intended use:

  • Yellow: Single-mode fibers (OS1/OS2), used for long-distance communication indoors or outdoors .
  • Orange: Older multimode fibers (OM1/OM2), typically designed for LED light sources and short-distance networks .
  • Aqua: Laser-optimized multimode fibers (OM3), supporting 10–100 Gb/s over short distances .
  • Erika Violet: Some OM4 fibers, indicating higher bandwidth and longer distance capability compared to OM3 .

Individual Fiber Colors

Within multi-fiber cables, each fiber is color-coded according to the TIA-598-C standard to simplify identification and reduce miswiring:

  1. Blue

  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with stripes or dual-color codes to maintain unique identification . Special 16-fiber MPO connectors may use additional colors like Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime .

Connector and Polish Color Coding

Connectors are also color-coded to indicate fiber type and polish:

  • Green: APC (Angled Physical Contact) connectors for single-mode fibers
  • Blue: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) connectors for single-mode fibers
  • Beige or Aqua: Multimode connectors, matching the fiber type inside the cable
