Check the power status of the fiber optic switch

You can check a fiber optic switch's power status by monitoring the internal power supply and environmental metrics, as well as the optical power of SFP transceivers using CLI commands or dashboard tools.

1. Checking Internal Switch Power

To verify the switch's internal power and environmental health:

  • CLI Commands (Cisco IOS/ Catalyst switches):
    • show environment all – Displays PSU status, fan status, temperature, and voltage readings.
    • show platform pm interface – Provides platform-specific power metrics.
  • Indicators to check:
    • PSU operational status (OK/Failed)
    • Voltage levels within normal range
    • Fan operation and temperature readings
  • Meraki Dashboard: For Cisco Meraki switches, internal power and environmental metrics are visible under Switching > Monitor > Switches > Ports and the Status section for each switch .

2. Checking SFP Optical Power

Fiber optic links rely on SFP transceivers, which have their own power metrics:

  • Key Metrics:
    • TX Power (Transmit): Strength of light leaving the switch; low TX may indicate a failing laser.
    • RX Power (Receive): Strength of light arriving from the remote device; low RX is a common cause of intermittent link issues.
    • Temperature, Voltage, Laser Bias Current: Electrical and thermal health of the SFP module .
  • CLI Commands (Cisco switches):
    • show inventory – Confirms the SFP module is recognized and lists model, vendor, and serial number.
    • show interface status – Checks if the port is up or down.
    • show interfaces transceiver detail – Displays TX/RX power, temperature, voltage, and bias current.
    • show idprom interface – Reads EEPROM/vendor info for the SFP .
  • Meraki Dashboard: DOM metrics for SFPs are displayed in real-time under the Ports tab, including historical charts and threshold alerts .

3. Interpreting Results

  • Normal ranges: Compare TX/RX power to the SFP datasheet specifications.
  • Alerts: Deviations from thresholds may indicate misalignment, fiber attenuation, or failing transceivers.
  • Troubleshooting: If a port shows “notconnect” or err-disabled, check the fiber cable, remote device, and SFP module compatibility . By combining internal power checks and SFP optical monitoring, you can ensure the fiber optic switch is fully operational and identify potential issues before they impact network performance.
