How to use a winch for laying optical cables

Using a cable-pulling winch allows controlled, safe, and efficient installation of optical fibre cables through ducts, pipes, or trenches.

Planning and Preparation

Before using a winch, conduct a thorough route survey to identify obstacles, bends, and potential problem areas along the cable path . Ensure the cable drum is inspected for damage and properly positioned on drum jacks or pay-off stands to allow smooth payout from the top of the drum . For long routes, consider bi-directional pulling by placing the drum centrally and forming large figure-8 loops on the ground to feed the cable from both ends .

Equipment Setup

  1. Select the appropriate winch: Choose a winch designed for fibre optic cables, capable of applying controlled, low pulling tension to prevent fibre breakage . Modern winches often include pull load indicators and tension limiters to maintain safe force levels .
  2. Install the pulling rope: If a rope is not already in the duct, use a rodder to push a rod through the duct, attach the rope, and reel back the rod to pull the rope through .
  3. Position cable rollers and guides: Use rollers at bends and entry points to reduce friction and prevent cable damage .

Pulling the Cable

  • Attach the cable to the pulling rope using a suitable cable sock or grip to ensure even force distribution .
  • Start the winch slowly, maintaining a smooth, consistent pull. Avoid jerky movements, as sudden tension can snap delicate optical fibres .
  • Monitor tension continuously using the winch's load indicator. Pre-set the maximum tension to prevent exceeding the cable's rated limit .
  • Coordinate team communication: Ensure personnel at both ends of the duct are aware of the pull progress and can respond to any snags or obstacles.

Post-Pull Checks

After the cable is laid, inspect it for cross-winding, kinks, or damage. Ensure the cable is properly seated in the duct or tray and that any excess slack is managed according to installation standards .

  • Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and safety glasses.
  • Keep the area around the winch and cable path clear of obstructions.
  • Avoid pulling cables in temperatures below recommended limits unless pre-conditioned, as cold can make the cable brittle . By following these steps, a winch can be used to efficiently and safely lay optical fibre cables, minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring reliable network performance .
