Understanding the Fiber Connection

Fiber optic internet delivers data via light signals through glass or plastic fibers, offering high speeds, low latency, and high bandwidth . The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or Optical Network Unit (ONU) converts these optical signals into electrical Ethernet signals that routers can process . For bridging purposes, the ONT is often set to bridge mode, disabling its routing functions and passing the internet connection directly to your primary router .

Bridging Two Routers

There are two main methods to bridge routers in a fiber setup:

1. Wired Bridging

• Connection: Use an Ethernet cable to connect a LAN port on the primary router to a LAN or WAN port on the secondary router .
• Configuration:
  • Set the secondary router to Access Point (AP) mode to avoid Double NAT issues.
  • Assign a static IP within the primary router's subnet to the secondary router.
• Advantages: Provides a stable, high-speed connection suitable for high-bandwidth applications and reduces latency compared to wireless bridging .

2. Wireless Bridging

• Connection: Routers communicate over Wi-Fi, creating a wireless link between the primary and secondary routers .
• Configuration: Enable wireless bridge or repeater mode on the secondary router and ensure both routers are compatible with bridging features.
• Advantages: Useful when running Ethernet cables is impractical, though it may reduce throughput slightly due to wireless overhead.

Multi-Router Considerations

• Router Mode vs. AP Mode: If the secondary router remains in router mode, it creates a separate subnet, leading to Double NAT . AP mode ensures all devices share the same network.
• IP Address Management: Ensure no IP conflicts by assigning unique static IPs to each router within the same subnet.
• Firmware Updates: Keep routers updated to support bridging features and maintain network stability .
• Network Coverage: Strategically place routers to maximize coverage and minimize interference, especially in large homes or offices.

Practical Steps for Fiber Setup

1. Connect Fiber to ONT: Plug the fiber optic cable into the ONT's input port .
2. Enable Bridge Mode on ONT: This allows your primary router to handle DHCP, NAT, and Wi-Fi management .
3. Connect Primary Router: Use an Ethernet cable from the ONT to the WAN port of your primary router.
4. Add Secondary Router: Connect via Ethernet (wired bridging) or configure wireless bridge mode.
5. Configure Network Settings: Set IP addresses, subnet masks, and ensure AP mode is enabled on the secondary router to unify the network .
