How to install the flange on the terminal box

Installing a flange terminal box requires careful preparation, proper alignment, and staged tightening of bolts to ensure a secure and safe connection.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Flange terminal box and flange assembly
  • Bolts, nuts, steel washers, and insulating washers (if required)
  • Torque wrench or hand wrench
  • Lubricant or anti-seizing compound for threads
  • Cleaning tools (wire brush, cloth)

Step 1: Prepare the Terminal Box and Flange

Ensure the terminal box and flange surfaces are clean, free of debris, rust, or oil. Inspect the flange for any cracks, corrosion, or damage. If the flange requires machining or modification, complete this before installation. Clean all bolts and apply a thin layer of lubricant or anti-seizing compound to the threads to facilitate proper torque .

Step 2: Align the Flange

Position the flange onto the terminal box so that all bolt holes align perfectly. Use alignment tools if necessary to avoid forced connections, which can cause stress or leaks. If the flange requires insulation on both sides, place an insulating washer after the steel washer on the bolt .

Step 3: Insert Bolts and Washers

Slide a steel washer onto each bolt and insert it into the bolt hole. If insulation is required, add the insulating washer. From the opposite end, place another insulating washer, steel washer, and nut. Ensure two full threads extend beyond the nut for proper engagement .

Step 4: Tighten Bolts in Stages

Tighten the nuts in multiple stages using a cross or star pattern to ensure uniform pressure:

  1. Lightly tighten all nuts by hand.
  2. Torque the first two diametrically opposite bolts to about 30% of the final torque.
  3. Continue torquing the remaining bolts to 50–60% of the final torque in the same sequence.
  4. Complete the final torque to 100%, ensuring no further rotation of nuts. For high-pressure or high-temperature applications, retorquing after startup may be necessary to compensate for relaxation or creep .

Step 5: Final Checks

  • Verify that the flange faces are parallel and concentric within 0.010 inches.
  • Ensure the gasket is properly seated and not reused.
  • Confirm that all bolts are torqued correctly and that insulation is properly installed.
  • Inspect the assembly for any misalignment or gaps that could compromise safety or performance . Following these steps ensures a secure, leak-proof, and long-lasting flange terminal box installation, suitable for industrial or electrical applications.
