Fiber optic sensors detect physical quantities by modulating properties of light, such as intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time, as it travels through the optical fiber.

Principle of Operation

A fiber optic sensor works by using an optical fiber as the sensing element or as a signal relay from a remote transducer. The system typically includes a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (or transducer), and a detector. When a physical parameter like temperature, strain, pressure, or vibration affects the fiber, it modulates the light traveling through it. This modulation can occur in several ways:

Types of Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensors can be intrinsic, where the fiber itself is the sensor, or extrinsic, where the fiber transmits light to a separate sensing element . Advanced distributed fiber optic sensing methods, such as Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Distributed Temperature and Strain Sensing (DTSS), and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), use the fiber to create thousands of continuous sensing points along its length, enabling real-time monitoring of temperature, strain, or vibrations over large distances .
