Malaysia is rapidly expanding its fibre optic network through Telekom Malaysia's PoP installations and railway corridor deployments by YTL Communications, enhancing digital connectivity nationwide.

Telekom Malaysia's Fibre Optic Network Hubs

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has completed phase one of its new fibre optic network hub (Point of Presence, PoP) installations across the northern region, Sabah, and Sarawak. PoPs are strategic locations where devices connect to the internet, effectively bringing fibre closer to end users. By situating PoPs near schools, TM aims to provide faster and more reliable internet access to rural and remote communities, reducing reliance on mobile networks and promoting digital inclusion. Phase one involved 677 sites, with 233 PoP circuits installed, achieving 100% completion ahead of schedule. The full project under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) plans 4,370 PoPs, with 4,323 near rural schools and 47 near industrial areas, to be completed over three years (2022–2025), .

Fibre Optic Deployment Along Railway Corridors

In a complementary initiative, the Malaysian government has opened railway corridors for fibre optic installation to all licensed telecommunications companies, ending the previous exclusivity held by Fiberail Sdn Bhd. This policy allows broader industry participation and aims to enhance Malaysia's digital infrastructure while generating recurring revenue for the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC). YTL Communications Sdn Bhd was selected to develop fibre along the 1,600 km North-South railway corridor, stretching from Padang Besar to Johor Bahru and extending to Tumpat in Kelantan. This terrestrial network provides a strategic alternative to undersea cables, which are vulnerable to geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea, thereby improving national digital resilience .

These initiatives collectively aim to narrow the digital divide, improve internet quality, and support economic development. By leveraging both PoP hubs and railway corridors, Malaysia is creating a robust, diversified digital backbone that supports future technologies like 5G and strengthens connectivity for education, industry, and remote communities.
