Materials included in optical cables

Optical cables are primarily made from ultra-pure glass or specialized plastics, with additional coatings, strength members, and protective jackets to ensure durability and performance.

Core and Cladding

The core of an optical fiber, which carries light signals, is typically made from ultra-pure silica glass (SiO₂) or, in some cases, specialized plastics like PMMA for short-distance applications . The cladding surrounds the core and is usually made from silica doped with materials such as fluorine or boron to slightly lower its refractive index, ensuring total internal reflection and efficient light transmission . For glass fibers, the core may be doped with germanium or phosphorus to increase the refractive index and optimize signal propagation .

Protective Coatings

To protect the delicate core and cladding, fibers are coated with UV-cured acrylate layers, often in a dual-layer system: a soft primary coating for flexibility and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection . In ribbon cables, a UV-curable resin may be used to hold multiple fibers together .

Strength Members

Fiber optic cables include strength members to prevent breakage during installation and use. Common materials include aramid yarn (Kevlar®), fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP), or steel wires, depending on the application . These materials provide tensile strength and protect the fiber from mechanical stress.

Outer Jacket and Additional Layers

The outer jacket protects the cable from environmental factors and is typically made from PVC, LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), or polyethylene (PE) . Some cables include water-blocking gels or tapes, metallic components for grounding, or chemical repellents to enhance durability in harsh conditions . Proprietary micro-additives like glass flakes or borates may also be incorporated to improve performance .

Glass vs. Plastic Fibers

  • Glass fibers: Offer low attenuation, high bandwidth, and long-distance transmission capabilities but are more fragile and harder to handle .
  • Plastic fibers: More flexible, easier to install, and cost-effective for short-distance applications, but have higher signal loss and lower bandwidth .
