Optical Cable Reel Unloading Procedure

Proper loading and unloading of optical cable reels requires careful handling, correct equipment use, and adherence to safety and cable integrity guidelines.

Pre-Handling Inspection

Before loading or unloading, visually inspect the reel and cable for any damage incurred during transport or storage. Check flange bolts, drum integrity, and cable condition. If damage is detected, contact the manufacturer or follow repair procedures before proceeding to prevent further cable degradation or installation issues .

Equipment and Positioning

  • Use a forklift with tynes longer than the drum width or a spreader beam with a shaft through the drum center to lift reels safely .
  • Never lift the reel by the flange or attempt to tilt it upright by lifting the top flange, as this can break the flange and render the drum unusable .
  • Ensure the reel is upright during transport and storage; never lay it on its side .
  • Raise the forklift forks at least 6–8 inches from the ground and do not release until the vehicle is stationary .

Loading Procedure

  1. Position the reel on a trailer or transport vehicle with flanges vertical.
  2. Insert a steel pipe or shaft through the drum center for leverage and control.
  3. Secure the reel with chains or straps, using protective padding to prevent spindle or flange damage .
  4. Avoid rolling the reel long distances; if necessary, roll only in the direction indicated by arrows on the flange .
  5. Tighten flange bolts before transport and periodically during long installations to maintain reel stability .

Unloading Procedure

  1. Use the same lifting method as loading, ensuring the reel remains upright.
  2. Lower gently onto a level, dry surface, preferably indoors or on concrete to prevent flange sinking .
  3. Check for cable tail: cut the cable leaving about one foot to allow free payout and prevent cable squirting .
  4. Manage back-tension during payout to keep the top layer tight and prevent tangling or kinking .
  5. Secure unused cable after installation to maintain tight wraps for future use .

Storage Guidelines

  • Store reels vertically with sufficient spacing for air circulation.
  • Avoid exposure to moisture, chemicals, or extreme temperatures, especially for wooden reels .
  • Periodically roll wooden reels 90° every three months to prevent uneven settling .
  • Re-tighten flange bolts during storage if necessary to maintain structural integrity .

Safety Precautions

  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, eyewear, and headgear .
  • Do not exceed the maximum pulling tension specified for the cable.
  • Avoid bending the cable beyond its minimum bend radius to prevent fiber damage .
  • Never drop or impact the reel; handle gently at all times . Following these procedures ensures safe handling, prevents cable damage, and maintains smooth installation of optical fiber cables.
