Materials for Tubular Busbars

Core Conductive Materials

Copper is the most common material for tubular busbars due to its high electrical conductivity, excellent heat resistance, and ease of fabrication. Copper is often used in ETP (Electrolytic Tough Pitch) form with 99.9% purity for maximum conductivity . Surface Treatments and Platings

To enhance performance and longevity, tubular busbars may be plated with tin, silver, nickel, or gold. Plating improves corrosion resistance, reduces contact resistance, and enhances connection reliability. For example, tin-plated copper is commonly used in coastal or humid environments to prevent oxidation while maintaining high conductivity . Gold plating is typically reserved for termination surfaces due to cost considerations .

Insulation Materials

Tubular busbars often require insulation to prevent short circuits and improve electrical performance. Common insulation materials include Nomex®, Tedlar®, Mylar®, Kapton®, Ultem®, epoxy-glass, and heat-shrink tubing. These materials provide mechanical protection, thermal stability, and electrical isolation, and can also influence capacitance and inductance characteristics in laminated or multi-layer busbar assemblies .
