Fiber optic cables follow the TIA-598-C standard, which defines a 12-color sequence for individual fibers: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate (Gray), White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose (Pink), Aqua (Light Blue) . This sequence is applied to fibers in both loose-tube and ribbon cables, and it repeats for cables with more than 12 fibers . For indoor tight-buffered cables, the same sequence is used, while for high-fiber-count cables, fibers are grouped into colored buffer tubes, each containing up to 12 fibers .
For cables exceeding 12 fibers (e.g., 48, 96, or 144 fibers), a “Tube and Fiber” system is used. Each buffer tube is assigned a color from the 12-color sequence, and the fibers inside the tube follow the same sequence. For example, Fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) . This method ensures that technicians can quickly locate and identify fibers during installation or maintenance.
In ribbon cables, fibers are arranged side-by-side in flat ribbons. Each ribbon follows the 12-color sequence, and additional ribbons repeat the sequence for higher fiber counts. For 16-fiber MPO connectors, a 16-color sequence is sometimes used: 13: Olive, 14: Magenta, 15: Tan, 16: Lime . This allows for precise identification in high-density applications.
