Overview

A virtualized access switch, commonly called a virtual switch (vSwitch), functions like a physical Layer 2 switch but operates entirely in software within a virtualized server environment . It connects virtual machines (VMs) to each other and to external physical networks through physical network interface cards (pNICs), enabling seamless communication between virtual and physical network components . Each VM connects to the vSwitch via a virtual network interface card (vNIC), which acts as a virtual port on the switch .
