How to energize a high-voltage distribution box switch

Energizing a high-voltage distribution box requires a strict, sequential procedure to ensure safety and proper operation.

Preparation and Safety Checks

  1. Confirm personnel safety: Ensure no personnel are working on any equipment in the distribution room or switchgear area .
  2. Verify documentation: Check that all test certificates, method statements, and pre-commissioning sheets are complete and approved .
  3. Remove temporary grounding and warning signs: Disconnect grounding wires starting from the line end, then the grounding end, and remove all warning tags .

Switchgear and Circuit Breaker Setup

  1. Position the circuit breaker truck: Use the transfer cart to move the breaker or PT truck in front of the cabinet, lock it in place, and insert the truck into the test position .
  2. Secure secondary connections: Insert the truck's secondary plug into the switchgear socket and fasten it securely .
  3. Close doors and operate earthing switch: Close the rear and front doors of the switchgear, open the earthing switch shutter, rotate the handle 90° counterclockwise to open the earthing switch, withdraw the handle, and close the shutter .

Energization Sequence

  1. Close bus-tie isolating switch: If the system has multiple busbars, close the bus-tie isolating switch to allow parallel operation .
  2. Sequentially close isolating switches: Close all isolating switches on the incoming lines in the correct order, ensuring no load is applied to any switch during operation .
  3. Close the incoming circuit breaker: After verifying all isolating switches are properly closed, close the main HV circuit breaker to energize the distribution box .

Verification

  1. Check system status: Confirm that busbars and incoming lines are operating correctly and that all HV components are in good condition .
  2. Monitor for faults: Observe for any abnormal readings, alarms, or tripping signals, and be prepared to isolate the system if necessary .

Key Safety Principles

  • Never operate an isolating switch under load .
  • Follow the reverse order of de-energization when powering on .
  • Maintain controlled access to the distribution room during energization . By following these steps, the high-voltage distribution box can be energized safely, ensuring both personnel safety and reliable operation of the electrical system.
