Where to connect the power supply to the distribution box

The main power supply is connected to the main MCB or isolator in the distribution box, from where it is distributed to all other circuits.

Main Connection Point

In a distribution box, the incoming phase and neutral lines from the utility or energy meter are first connected to the main isolator or main MCB. This main switch acts as the primary control point for the entire electrical system, allowing you to manually open or close the supply to the distribution box for safety or maintenance purposes .

Flow of Electricity

  1. From the main MCB/isolator, the phase line is routed to the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker), which protects against current leakage and electric shocks .
  2. The neutral line is connected to a neutral bus bar inside the distribution box.
  3. Branch circuits are then connected to individual MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers), which protect each circuit from overloads or short circuits .

Wiring Layout

  • The incoming supply is typically connected on the left side of the distribution box, while the outgoing circuits are on the right .
  • Proper labeling of phase, neutral, and voltage levels is essential for safety and maintenance .
  • All wires should be neatly tied and organized to prevent hazards and ensure easy inspection .

Safety Considerations

  • Ensure the main MCB has a suitable rating for the total load of the building, commonly 63A for domestic installations .
  • RCCBs must be installed to protect against leakage currents.
  • Only qualified personnel should handle the connection of the main power supply to avoid electric shock or fire hazards . By connecting the main power supply to the main MCB or isolator first, the distribution box safely manages and distributes electricity to all circuits while providing essential protection mechanisms.
