Fiber Optic Sensor Teaching Mode

TEACH mode in fiber optic sensors is a calibration process that sets the sensor's detection threshold by learning the light and dark conditions of the target environment.

Overview of TEACH Mode

TEACH mode is used to automatically set and optimize the sensitivity of a fiber optic sensor. During this process, the sensor "learns" the two key conditions it will encounter: the light condition (maximum received light) and the dark condition (minimum received light). This allows the sensor to accurately differentiate between the presence and absence of a target, even when the contrast is very small .

How TEACH Mode Works

  1. Present the Light Condition: Position the target or remove it so that the sensor receives the maximum light. The sensor records this as the light reference.
  2. Present the Dark Condition: Position the target or object to block the light, creating the minimum light condition. The sensor records this as the dark reference.
  3. Automatic Threshold Setting: The sensor calculates the switching threshold, typically just above the dark condition, ensuring reliable detection .
  4. LED Feedback: Many sensors, like the D12 Expert Series, provide LED indicators that flash during TEACH mode to confirm successful learning of each condition .

Implementation Tips

  • TEACH mode can be activated directly via a push button on the sensor or remotely using a programming switch connected to the sensor's gray wire .
  • The order of presenting light and dark conditions can be flexible; the sensor will adjust accordingly.
  • Ensure the fiber ends are properly seated and secured in the sensor ports to maintain consistent light transmission .
  • TEACH mode is particularly useful for detecting small or transparent objects, where precise threshold calibration is critical .

Applications

  • Industrial automation for detecting parts on a conveyor.
  • Safety and monitoring systems (excluding personnel protection, as TEACH mode sensors are not designed for safety-critical applications).
  • Transparent or low-contrast object detection in manufacturing processes .
