OM4 is specifically designed as a multimode fiber (MMF) for high-speed, short- to medium-range applications within buildings and campus networks, supporting 10G, 40G, and 100G Ethernet over distances up to approximately 550 meters at 10Gb/s . It is optimized for VCSEL laser transmission at 850 nm and provides higher modal bandwidth than OM3, allowing longer reach for multimode systems . Single-mode fiber, such as OS2, is a different type of fiber designed for long-distance transmission, often measured in kilometers rather than meters. Single-mode fibers have a much smaller core diameter, allowing only one light mode to propagate, which reduces modal dispersion and enables higher bandwidth over long distances . OM4 cannot replace single-mode fiber for long-haul or inter-building links because multimode fibers like OM4 are limited in distance and bandwidth compared to single-mode fibers .
