Fiber optic connection to switch and router

Fiber optic cables connect first to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which then links via Ethernet to a router or switch depending on your network setup.

How Fiber Optic Connections Work

Fiber optic internet transmits data using light through glass or plastic strands, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and higher reliability than copper-based connections . However, standard routers and switches cannot directly interpret optical signals. The Optical Network Terminal (ONT), provided by your ISP, serves as the conversion point, translating light signals into electrical Ethernet signals .

Connecting to a Router

For most home networks, the ONT connects to a router via an Ethernet cable:

  1. Plug the fiber optic cable from the wall outlet into the ONT's optical port.
  2. Power on the ONT and wait for the status lights to stabilize.
  3. Use a Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cable to connect the ONT's LAN port to the router's WAN or Internet port.
  4. Power on the router and configure it using the admin panel, entering ISP credentials if required . This setup allows the router to manage Wi-Fi and wired connections for all devices in the home.

Connecting to a Switch

In larger networks or business environments, you may want to distribute the connection to multiple devices:

  1. Connect the ONT to a router as above.
  2. Connect a network switch to one of the router's LAN ports.
  3. Devices can then connect to the switch via Ethernet, expanding the number of wired connections without overloading the router . Directly connecting fiber to a switch is generally not possible unless the switch has a built-in SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) port designed for fiber modules. Even then, the ONT is usually still required to convert the optical signal to Ethernet for standard network devices .

  • Ensure your router or switch supports the speeds provided by your fiber connection (Gigabit or multi-gigabit capable).
  • Use high-quality Ethernet cables (Cat6a or higher) to maintain optimal performance.
  • Place the ONT and router in a well-ventilated area near power outlets.
