Step 4: Decide Number of Inputs and Outputs

The combiner box must have enough input circuits to accommodate all strings. The output circuit(s) should match the inverter or charge controller input. For example, if you have 8 strings and the inverter has 4 MPPTs, you may connect 2 strings per MPPT .

Step 5: Select Protection Devices

Include fuses or DC circuit breakers for each string to prevent overcurrent. Add DC surge protection devices (SPDs) to limit voltage spikes and a DC isolator or switch-disconnector for safe maintenance .

Step 6: Verify Ratings

Ensure the combiner box's maximum voltage and current ratings exceed the calculated string voltage and total current. For large systems, consider 1500V DC-rated boxes to reduce losses and improve efficiency .

Step 7: Optional Features

For larger or utility-scale systems, you may include string-level monitoring, status indicators, communication ports, and remote alarms to simplify maintenance and supervision . By following these steps, you can calculate and select a PV combiner box that safely consolidates multiple solar strings, protects the system, and ensures efficient operation.
