The degree of protection is often expressed using IP (Ingress Protection) codes, where the first digit indicates protection against solids (dust) and the second against liquids (water). For example, IP55 ensures dust protection and water jets resistance, while IP65/IP67 provides dust-tight and temporary immersion protection . NEC Requirements: In the United States, NEC Article 312 specifies that outdoor distribution boxes must have rain-tight enclosures (NEMA 3R or 4) to prevent water ingress in wet locations . The enclosures must also provide proper grounding, overcurrent protection, and safe access for maintenance. NEMA Ratings: NEMA ratings define environmental protection for enclosures. For outdoor use, NEMA 3R is rain-tight, NEMA 4 is watertight and corrosion-resistant, and NEMA 4X adds enhanced corrosion protection.
